; Faculty Affiliate, Committee on Environment, Geography and Urbanization
The University of Chicago

Grga Bašić is a designer, researcher, and cartographer whose work explores the planetary dynamics of urbanization and environmental change through geospatial visualization and spatial media. Using satellite remote sensing, cartography, and computational methods, he translates large Earth observation data into images, maps, animations, and multimedia narratives for research, exhibitions, and public engagement.

His visual and cartographic projects have been commissioned and exhibited by institutions including Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, the Venice Biennale of Architecture, and Bergen Assembly. He is also part of the Climate Rights initiative, where he develops geospatial and audiovisual evidence for climate justice and contemporary climate litigation.

Prior to joining the Urban Theory Lab, Bašić held multiple academic appointments at Columbia University: Research Scholar at the Center for Spatial Research and the Center for Resilient Cities and Landscapes, and Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation.

He holds a Bachelor of Architecture and a Master of Architecture with distinction from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, and a Master in Design Studies with distinction from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. His first book, Data-Spheres of Planetary Urbanization (with Neil Brenner, Mariano Gomez-Luque, and Nikos Katsikis; Jovis, 2026), develops experimental spatial visualizations of the world’s urban fabric first presented at the 2021 Venice Biennale of Architecture. His work has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the University of Chicago’s Institute on the Formation of Knowledge and the International Institute of Research in Paris, and Columbia University’s Brown Institute for Media Innovation.
