This course was taught at the Cairo Institute for Liberal Arts and Sciences during the spring of 2023. The class explored different construction materials and the geographies of extraction in which they are embedded, such as concrete, granite, decorative vegetation, and sand. The class highlighted the ecological and social reproductive costs of Egypt’s current rapid urbanization. It concluded with the presentation of students’ final projects, in which they used visual forms of maps, videos, and designed booklets.
